Local marketing

The best local marketing strategy might not involve Google at all

New businesses with few reviews can still win nearby customers through print, referrals, and visibility. Google helps later; it is not the only path.

Google is powerful, but it is not mandatory on day one. A brand-new salon, clinic, or trade business often has thin reviews, a young domain, and no time to wait six months for rankings. Neighbours still need services. They can discover you through letterboxes, counters, vans, and word of mouth while your online footprint catches up.

"Succeed without Google" does not mean "ignore Google forever." It means you can grow before the algorithm notices you.

When Google is a weak first bet

  • You have fewer than ten reviews and competitors have hundreds
  • Your category keywords are dominated by nationals and aggregators
  • You need jobs this month, not this quarter
  • Your service area is small and mappable

In those cases, budget spent purely on SEO retainers or broad search terms may underperform a targeted print test.

What works instead

Targeted leaflets with one offer to streets you can serve.

Partnerships with complementary locals (estate agents, cafés, gyms) who see your ideal customer daily.

Van and uniform visibility on your actual routes.

A simple landing page linked from a QR code, even if organic traffic is near zero.

Customers who meet you offline often search your name, not a generic keyword. That is an easier SERP to win.

Add Google as reinforcement

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Ask happy customers for reviews after each local job. Post photos from recognizable streets. Those steps cost little and compound.

When branded search rises, you will know offline marketing is doing its job.

Measure customers, not rankings yet

Count calls, bookings, and QR scans from your first print run. If the diary fills from nearby postcodes, you have a strategy that works independent of position three vs position eight for "best [service] [city]."

flyerfly is for owners who want that print response counted while Google visibility catches up.
