A QR code that does not scan is wasted print. These rules keep codes readable on door-drop leaflets, counter flyers, and business cards.
Minimum size
As a rule of thumb, print QR codes at least 20 mm × 20 mm on A5 or A6 leaflets. Business cards can go slightly smaller if contrast is strong and you test on the final stock, but avoid postage-stamp sizes.
Quiet zone (clear margin)
Leave empty space around the code. Most standards recommend a margin roughly equal to four modules (the small squares in the pattern). Do not place text, logos, or borders inside that margin.
Contrast and colour
Black on white is the safest combination. Dark ink on light paper works if the difference is strong. Reverse-print codes (light on dark) can work but need extra proofing.
Avoid low-contrast brand colours that look fine to the eye but fail under phone cameras.
Placement on the layout
Put the code where a thumb naturally rests:
- Bottom-right on a leaflet back
- Near contact details on a business card
- Away from folds, creases, and heavy ink coverage
Add a short call to action (“Scan for 10% off”) so people know why to bother.
Test before print
Print one proof at actual size. Scan it with both iPhone and Android cameras in indoor light and daylight. If it fails once, enlarge the code or increase contrast before you commit to a run.
